The story

Empathize

This is the project that introduced me to my love of UX and UI design. My teammates and I were tasked to design an application, targeting our college peers. The theme of the assignment was reflection, so it must have an aspect of reflection within it. We decided that there was some unchartered space in the digital fitness world. Not many people are comfortable sharing or reflecting on their fitness goals, workouts, or progress. This application is not published and was an academic project, however, I'd love to walk you through the process and end result.

The discovery

Empathize

We led our discovery with three different methods: user interviews, surveys, and observation. Our hope was to find a need or interest in sharing more about fitness with a community. With these methods, we also gauged fitness levels and interest in fitness in general.

Our discovery resulted in 3 main findings:

There is hesitancy to share personal fitness on social media
Young adults are motivated by fitness influencers and experts
Young adults rarely reflect on their fitness activities

The goal

Define
Develop an application that incorporates fitness accomplishments (big or small) and inspiration with a sense of tangible community in order to improve personal fitness and remove stigma around who can and can't post about fitness

The brand

ideate

Knowing we wanted to focus on fitness, we did research and created a mood board. We felt like health and fitness made us think of nutrition, nature, progress, moving forward, and all of those align with the color green, which symbolizes life, growth, and vitality.

The name comes from the idea of bring everyone into their own fitness community, no matter their level or comfortability with exercise. Our goal was to create an application in the fitness space that makes anyone and everyone feel welcome to learn about exercise and share their own journey with others. We wanted to make fitness fun and a topic of conversation and we liked the idea of people even coming together outside of the app to workout together. After some brainstorming sessions, we landed on 'fitfam' and loved it.

The usability test

TEST

We put this prototype in front of peers. Below are consistent findings and proposed solutions across most tests.

As a new user, the plus sign in the top left corner had little context. After using the app for a while, most users agreed it made sense.
Solution: Keep the plus sign. A new user will download the app to post about workouts, so similar to Instagram or Facebook, the plus sign will designate a new post, but specifically a 'workout post' for this app.
76% of the users were confused by the progress bar and level. They also did not realize those correlated with the numbers on the posts.
40% of the users mentioned that levels may not be necessary to keep the environment safe and welcoming, while 60% of users liked the idea of gaining points as they post about workouts.
Solution: We decided the level and progress bar need more context. We also want to do more research on the effect of gamification while trying to create a welcoming, safe, open, digital community.

Disclaimer: This was an academic project so this app was not deployed-- just designed for a presentation. The scale of this application could be much larger and I am more than happy to discuss it more in detail. I showcased what I thought were the primary points to share as I provided a snapshot into this project.
